Sucka DJ’s beware! The L22Fam’s first and long-time DJ, Flipstyles (Richard Candela), is back on the “wheels of steel” (do people still call it that? LOL). Over the years Flipstyles has blessed us with murderous cuts on several Deuce Deuce classics such as “For the Record”, “The Truest”, “The Chief”, and most recently “The New Weapons”. Earlier this week, he posted up a YouTube video of him effortlessly scratchin’ a sample like it was business as usual, and I have to admit it was definitely a nostalgic moment for me personally.

Left: 1998. Right: 1999.

Along with “the Queen” Leschke (LOL!), my man Flipper has been there with me since day one. From walkin’ to our local Sav-on to make ‘color’ copies of our cassette tape albums, to stayin’ up late nights with my ass in the dead heat of summer to record a whole album in one damn take. On & off the stage, the homie always had my back on those tables, and I was always confident enough to tell you “that’s my mothafuckin’ DJ”. But shortly after high school, Flipstyles was forced to sell his mixer and turntables, and I have to say that was a very sad day in L22’s history. As dedicated and talented a DJ that guy was, I’m sure we shared the same amount of devastation when he sold his hard-earned equipment.

Left: 2002. Right: 2001.

So finally, 8 years later I decided to give him a pair of broke ass 1200’s that were sold to me, and told Rich straight up they were his as long as he could get ‘em fixed. Besides, those tables woulda been worth squat in the hands of an emcee such as myself, and I wouldn’t just give 1200’s away to someone if that person didn’t possess the skills my man Flipper did. Now why is this such a big deal to me? When people talk about the greatest Hip Hop duos of all time, you hear the likes of Eric B. & Rakim, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Gangstarr, and so on. And what do they all have in common? Each of those groups had one deadly emcee and one wicked ass DJ. In 1997, it was MistaMil & Flipstyles. Today, I’m proud to say the name still remains. “Once Again” baby! Go get’ em Rich!! – Mil

Happy Birthday to the L22Fam! Last weekend we celebrated our 13th Anniversary at The Chaya and enjoyed the rest of our night at The Edison in Downtown LA. It was great seeing all the close homies as well as a couple new faces! Special thanks to my man Reach for setting the whole night up despite all the RSVP changes! Thanks to my girlfriend Jackie for bein’ my beautiful date that evening (hehe), and to Def J, Berretto, Justin, John, Alex, Reed & FreshNSexy.com, Fred, Jelynn, Melissa, Erin, Jill, Rose, Claudia, Cath, Tej, Leah, Sharlene, and Henry, for showing love & support for the L22Fam.

Meesh, Joe, Mike, Jenn, Honda, Leschke, Obscene … you were with us in spirit!

If you didn’t get a chance to read about this event in our ‘Events’ section, here is a little excerpt of what I wrote explaining who we are and what we’re all about.

“For those of you who don’t know our history, we are more than just a “record label” or a Hip-Hop crew. We’re a tight knit group of close friends that we can call “Fam” whether we’ve known each other for 20 years or 2 years. When I came up with the whole idea of “L22″ with Leschke, one of our goals was to create something even bigger than ourselves. It offered a platform for the homies to showcase their unique musical talents while making it fun at the same time. It gave us an identity, a home to call our own. Whether you were an emcee, a DJ, producer, or just a homie showin’ your support, you were a part of what we call the L22Fam. In the past 13 years it brought us closer together through countless shows, recording sessions, anniversary events, house parties, and simple kickbacks. Whenever I’m on stage and I see my people standin’ in the audience havin’ a damn good time, I know my work is done. We have a lot of new faces to the Fam, and we’d like to welcome you as we unveil a new chapter in L22’s long history!”

I’ve compiled all sets of photos taken that night for your convenience. Simply right click and ‘Save As’.

What happened to L22006? L22007? L22008? L22009? Has it really been that long since we released our last yearly anthem? Just when things started to get rollin’, I had to drop the bomb on y’all and call it quits. My bad. So where did we leave off? Between 2006 and 2007, I released a few B-sides that were supposed to appear on my heavily promoted Lost In Chinatown LP. But even before that I was also working on a remix album of my 2005 release Off Center of Attention. Instead of remixing the track titled “L22005″, I decided a “L22006″ would make more sense since it was already the new year.

Never quite got it done. Our close affiliate XL Middleton and I were the only ones that completed verses. So today I was going through some of my old files and I stumbled upon the incomplete recording. And since this is L22Records.com, the greatest website ever made, you know we’re gonna give you the exclusive listen! Here is the unfinished & unreleased 2006 posse cut without the posse LOL. Excuse the quality but as always, enjoy!

Here are three Deuce Deuce classics that some of you might have missed during my 4 year hiatus. “Temporary Thing”, “Never Give Up”, and “Don’t Let It Get To Ya Head” were B-side singles released online between 2006 and 2007 during the time I was heavily working on Lost In Chinatown (which still has never seen the light of day).

MistaMil – Temporary Thing (2006)

MistaMil – Never Give Up (2006)

MistaMil – Don’t Let It Get To Ya Head (2007)

About a month ago, L22’s good homie Tokes informed me of some diss track mentioning various established OC underground emcees such as our good friends the Speach Impediments, Ariano, and myself included. I was surprised, really. Personally, I didn’t think anyone even gave a damn about me, especially since I’ve been out the music scene for 4 years LOL. What did I do? So basically after all this shit talkin’ this guy (I won’t even bother mentioning his name because he deserves zero attention) does on his track, right at the end he straight up says “Fuck Rammil!” (usin’ my real name & shit) and goes on about how I’m a “wannabe asian LL” and a “straight-edge pussy ass bitch”, angry at the fact that I denied his ass years ago when he wanted to work with me. You don’t even have to hear it because that’s pretty much all he said about me, and the track itself ain’t really worth the listen.

Now I’m not sure how old this track was since it was totally off the radar and I knew nothing about it. But I ain’t about to sit here and listen to some dude sayin’ “Fuck Rammil!” and be like “oh ok, I guess”. And since I’m an emcee’s emcee at heart, you’re gotdayum right I’m gonna retaliate because it’s in my gotdayum nature to. So look, I ain’t tryin’ to pull no street shit or try to be all hard on wax. That’s not me. In fact, I ain’t even pissed off about the whole thing either. Some of you might think, “Why waste your time with someone so small-time & irrelevant?”. This is Hip-Hop, this is what we do. Someone had an opinion about me, and I can respect that. But I guarantee they can expect something in return. And with that, I leave you with my first diss since High School. *sigh* Just when I thought we were all grown men fighting for the same cause. Some mothafuckaz never learn. Enjoy!

Whattup World!  It’s ya boy MistaMil, Big Mil, Ram Mahn, Goodness Gracious, The Brown Hope, Mr. Perfect in the black silk underwear here to tell y’all that L22Records.com is officially back online and better than ever!  As promised, the new format of the website will be a blog (since that seems to be ‘the thing to do’ nowadays LOL) and will feature news, music, videos, and all that other good stuff as we will update this often.  The site is still somewhat in construction so bare with us.  We’re hoping to get a bio and photo page going in the near future.  In the meantime, you can check out all the classics (haha) on the ‘LISTEN’ page.  There you’ll be able to listen to songs in their entirety instead of the snippets on our media player you see on the side.  Also feel free to leave comments.  We’d love to hear from ya!

As y’all may know, I’ve been out the music loop for nearly 4 years since Def J and I released The Owners Mixtape in 2006.  You’ve probably also been wondering what happened to my second album Lost In Chinatown, which was 50% complete when I decided to take a break.  I’m setting Lost In Chinatown aside to work on our current project The Owners Choice, the followup to our 2006 The Owners Mixtape.  I felt the need to put out a project that would bring us back to where we left off, instead of putting out another solo LP without having anymore relevance in the scene after 4 years of being gone.  This is definitely a project that I owe to the fans.  Below is a taste of what’s in store for 2010!

Produced by MistaMil (off the upcoming album The Owners Choice)

To all of our close friends and dedicated fans that have stuck with me & the crew over the years, we truly appreciate your loyalty and support.  4 years missing in action is a very long time, and it took a lot, physically and emotionally, to make this comeback even happen.  You’ve probably heard Def J and I boasting about L22’s return in the last year or so but it never really came through.  Well, I’m here now to make it official … MistaMil, Def J & the L22 Fam are back!  Meesh is on board.  FlipStyles.  Berretto.  RP.  Even the homie Mr. Clean.  I’m even bringin’ back some old friends from our early days for our upcoming project.  I promise you that we will deliver the goods you’ve all been patiently waiting for.  So please stay tuned: bookmark us, subscribe to our feed, anything!  You will not be disappointed!

L22010 and beyond b*tches!  Now play that British Bulldog theme song dammit!

Okay, so once my ass figures this shit out we’ll be on our way.   The new website will be in a blog format.  I guess pretty much everyone has one since everyone and their grandma thinks they’re so important and their “expertise” opinion on everything matters more than yours.  But I promise this website will stick to the script as best as possible and not stray off into my own personal matters.  I’m not gonna go off and tell the whole world what I’m having for lunch, or rant about how much I think Alicia Keys became so corny.  We’re gonna keep this strictly about the music!
